Heat Advisory
Summer is here, which means being prepared for excessive heat and what that means for yourself and your HVAC equipment.
Here’s your guide to Summer Heat Advisories and some steps to keep you cool!
- Avoid the Heat: Stay indoors as much as possible and reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to early in the morning or evening
- Wear Appropriate Attire: Loose-fitting and lightweight clothing
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, even when you don’t feel thirsty
- Know the Symptoms of Heat Disorders: Sunburn, Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion, & Heat Stroke
When the heat index is expected to be over 100, your air conditioner may be doing everything it can to cool your house. For best performance, we recommend taking the following actions:
- Make sure your air filter is clean
- Use ceiling fans to help cool rooms
- Keep blinds and curtains closed when possible
Don’t expect your a/c to cool your house below 76 / 77 degrees during the heat of the day. It won’t be able to achieve those temperatures in this South Florida weather.
One tip to check if your air conditioner is running properly is to test it at night. After the heat of the day is over and the sun has gone down, check your thermostat settings and watch the equipment overnight. Is it able to achieve the temperatures you set it for? Does it cycle off and seem to run okay overnight? In the morning hours before the heat of the day does it reach the temperatures you have it set for?
If you answer yes to these questions, then mechanically the equipment is probably okay. During the daytime it may not be able to keep up with the demand of the South Florida temperatures. Or there may be other factors to consider in your home, such as old or damaged duct work, low or missing attic insulation or old windows & doors.
