Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling Properly?

AC Inspection

Having your air conditioner fail to cool your home properly during the summer is an especially frustrating experience. Chances are pretty high that your air conditioner will need professional repair to resume cooling your home as it should. While you’re waiting for your professional technician to arrive, though, you should take a look below at some of the possible reasons why your air conditioner isn’t cooling properly.

Refrigerant Leaks

If your air conditioner is blowing the same amount of air that it normally does, but it’s not as cool as it should be, then you might have a refrigerant leak. Your air conditioner relies on the same charge of refrigerant that it received during installation throughout its lifespan. It should never require additional refrigerant except in the case of a leak.

Refrigerant leaks slowly rob the air conditioner of its ability to cool. As the level of refrigerant in the system drops, the air conditioner’s ability to cool will drop as well. Eventually, the system can break down entirely due to not having enough refrigerant left to run. Make sure that you call for repairs if you notice fluid of any kind leaking from your air conditioner.

Clogged Air Filter

If your air conditioner doesn’t seem to be circulating enough air through the home, the air filter might be clogged. The air filter is designed to protect the air conditioner’s components from dust and other contaminants commonly found in your indoor air. If the filter isn’t changed every few months, though, it will eventually become clogged. A clogged air filter will block most of the air in the ducts from flowing into the air conditioner. No airflow into the air conditioner, no airflow to the rest of the house. Try replacing your air filter, or have a professional do it for you, and see if that fixes the problem.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is when the air conditioner turns itself on and off every few minutes instead of completing a full cycle. This is a problem for a number of reasons. First of all, it cuts into the air conditioner’s ability to cool the home. Second, and more importantly, it accelerates the rate at which the air conditioner will wear down over time. The longer an air conditioner is allowed to short cycle, the more prone it will be to developing other issues or breaking down entirely. Prolonged short cycling can also shorten the lifespan of the air conditioner by up to several years. So, if your air conditioner is turning on and off over and over we highly recommend that you call for repairs as soon as possible. Faster repairs will be much more likely to prevent some of the nastier consequences of short cycling.
