Happy National Dog Day to all of our fellow dog lovers out there!

national dogs day

As we all know, dogs have been considered “man’s best friend” for as long as we can remember, but the relationship between your dog and your air conditioning system is a little more complicated.

How Can Dogs Affect Your A/C?

Quality of Air:

Seeing dog fur on the carpet and furniture is very common and quite easy to remove, but did you know their fur actually gets into the filters, ducts, and coils of your air conditioning unit as well? Extreme build-up of fur and dander in your system can cause damage to the unit and affect its ability to cool the home. This can also cause allergens and smells to circulate throughout your home.

How to prevent these pet related A/C problems:

Step 1:

Make sure to use a quality filter that fits your A/C unit properly. The usual recommendation is to change them monthly, but for larger dogs or breeds that shed more, we recommend you change your filters every three weeks.

Step 2:

Have your coils cleaned if they are dirty, which will improve the efficiency of your A/C system.

Step 3:

Every time you operate your system in your home, animal dander and other debris can get wedged into the duct work, which can create an environment for bacteria, mold, and fungus to grow. Cleaning your ducts can improve your indoor air quality and even help save on energy bills.

Step 4:

Install a UV light purification system. This can kill off germs in the air, helping to keep your air cleaner without blocking airflow through the system.
