Your Air Filter, Your AC, and You

dirty-ductless-air-filterDid you know the air you breath can impact your health? We aren’t just talking about smog; we mean the amount of dust, pollen and other contaminants in the air that might enter your lungs, can have an effect on your health. What’s more, this debris can impact the health of your air conditioner over time too, making it harder for your system to run the more it builds up.

Thank goodness you have an air filter!

The filter within your air system is able to, well, filter out a lot of stuff that you might not want in your house, or in your throat! But even this handy little part of your cooling system has its limits. The question is, what can you do to help care for it and improve the health of you and your AC?

Read on to find the answer!

Did you know that your air filter plays a vital role in keeping your air conditioner operating unhindered? Whether you have a ductless system, a heat pump, etc. your cooler needs a properly installed and well-maintained filter to keep it running. If you are wondering why, we are happy to explain!

What Does My Air Filter Do?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, your air filter plays a vital role in maintaining your system’s operation. Its primary goal is to clean the air circulating inside your home, trapping unwanted particulates to keep them out of the air system.

Your AC wouldn’t run too well without a filter. For example, if you turned on your air conditioner sans filter, dirt and dust could collect on your evaporator coil, impairing the coil’s ability to absorb heat.

Air Filter Upkeep

Maintenance for your air filter will vary depending on whether it is reusable or not.

You should be able to clean your reusable air filter. You will want to do this once a month, if not once every other month, to ensure the filter is doing its job well. Cleaning a reusable filter is as easy as removing it, vacuuming it to remove larger particles, and then washing it with warm water to clean off the remaining debris. Make sure you let the filter fully dry before putting it back!

If you have a non-reusable filter, also known as a disposable filter, the process is a bit shorter. Simply remove the old filter, dispose of it properly and replace it with a new one. This should be done as often as you would clean a reusable filter.

When To Call A Pro

Your filter will definitely do its fair share of work in keeping the air your AC system circulates, and that you breathe, clean. However, no air filter will be able to protect your cooling system from all wear and tear.  Whether it is for a clogged air filter or for another issue with your cooling system, it pays to contact a professional for effective Homestead AC repairs no matter how big or small.
