Air On Demaind: A Greener Business

Green Business | Miami | Air On DemandThe Pinecrest Tribute: E-mail vs. Paper? The Answer Does Make A Difference

According to a recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report:
• Nearly 4 billion trees per year are cut down due to the paper industry.
• Today, the world consumes about 300 million tons of paper each year.
• The U.S., which contains only 5% of the world’s population, uses 30% of all paper.

If we look at the big picture, reducing paper waste affects not only trees. One must think about the entire process involved in producing printed material. What impact does the machinery and trucks used to harvest the trees have? What about the factories and chemicals that are used when making paper? Have you ever seen the smoke stacks at a paper factory? How about the vehicles that are used in transporting the paper from the factory to a local printer? Then how does
the printed material make it to the end user? The full impact is almost immeasurable. At Air On Demand, we have dedicated ourselves to finding ways to reduce those numbers and our impact on the environment. We have moved our Service Technicians from the old style “carbon service receipt” to new modern laptops. We are using laptops and wireless internet to communicate and dispatch real-time information to our Service Technicians in the field. All service receipts are completed using mobile applications, no more “old carbon” receipts. We don’t even have to print a “paper” receipt unless a customer requests it. In many cases, we just e-mail customers their service receipts. Not only does this new technology help us reduce paper waste, it allows us to be more efficient and allows us to give our customers the best service available! For more information, please call Air On Demand at 305-259-5669.

Air On Demand provides top quality air conditioning, heating, indoor air quality, ductwork, and commercial HVAC service to Miami, Pinecrest, Cutler Bay, and the surrounding areas.

Miami AC Guide: Optimal Air Conditioning Installation

Monday, June 18th, 2012

Guideline #1: Air Circulation Clearance

Air conditioners, whether they are installed in Miami or Coconut Grove, need to be able to circulate the air around them. They draw the warm ambient air in to keep the refrigerant lines from freezing and pump the cooled air out into the home. So, the outdoor condenser units need enough clearance from outside walls, shrubs and other possible obstructions. When installing an outdoor condenser unit, they should be set far enough off the house that air can circulate easily and any surrounding shrubs or trees should be pruned back or removed. Improper circulation clearance can degrade the performance of the unit and significantly shorten its life.

Guideline #2: Refrigerant Lines

Refrigerant lines need some extra slack left in them to prevent possible damage. If a line is totally taut and the condenser unit were to move even a little bit – perhaps because of non-level ground or inclement weather – it can easily get damaged. Damaged lines can leak refrigerant, causing performance problems and potential health hazards.

Guideline #3: Proper Insulation

In addition to being protected from damage, refrigerant lines also need to be properly insulated. Inadequate or missing insulation can cause excess moisture and condensation from the lines, resulting in dehumidification problems, water damage and possibly even insect problems. Keeping refrigerant lines insulated also keeps performance high and operation costs low.

Guideline #4: Distance from the Home

There isn’t a set “proper” distance from the home for a compressor unit to be installed. It can work from just about any reasonable distance. The issue is just keeping the refrigerant lines at the right diameter for the distance, so that the refrigerant can flow properly.

Guideline #5: Level Ground

Finally, the outdoor unit needs to be installed on level ground, typically on a pad of concrete, vinyl or some other durable material. This helps ensure proper clearance (see guideline #1) and a unit that won’t move readily (guideline #2).

With an understanding of those five guidelines, you can have a reasonable idea of what a properly installed air conditioner looks like. Call Air On Demand today if you want more information about Miami air conditioning system installation!

Palmetto Bay Air Conditioning Repair Tip: Signs of a Broken Compressor

Monday, June 11th, 2012

There are lots of reasons that your Palmetto Bay air conditioner may malfunction, so it can be difficult to tell if a bad compressor is the culprit. Take a look at this guide to see if your AC problems are caused by a broken compressor.

Start by turning you air conditioner on. When it turns on – or when it is triggered to go on by the thermostat – do any of the following things happen?

  1. The circuit breaker trips – If this happens once, or even every so often, it’s probably nothing to worry about. Maybe somebody is just using a hair dryer at the same time. But if the circuit breaker is being tripped consistently when the AC goes on, it’s almost a sure sign that the compressor is broken.
  2.  You hear loud noises coming from the AC – grinding, clanking, knocking, buzzing, etc. – Any unusual noises emanating from the air conditioner are signs of bad news. Any grinding, clanking, knocking, buzzing or other unpleasant sounds are symptoms of a condition that needs repair. It may or may not be the compressor, but in any event it needs to be looked at.
  3. The system just hums –  On the flip side, a system that is too quiet is also problematic. If you just hear humming from the AC system, that could be the sound of it running without the compressor. This happens when the compressor has failed completely.

All of this signs are obvious and easy to observe, and any one of them can mean that your AC compressor is broken. In addition, if you are still not sure whether the compressor is a problem, see if you can locate and gain access to the compressor motor. Consult your owner’s manual for instructions.

If the wiring in the area is visibly damaged, like it appears singed, burned or otherwise tarnished, this is another sign that it is time to repair or replace the compressor itself.

While all of these are pretty good indicators of a bad compressor, only a licensed Palmetto Bay AC technician can accurately diagnose and repair the problem. If you have been noticing any of these symptoms from your AC system, or if you have any other reason to think your compressor is broken, you should call Air On Demand to have it looked at.

Miami Air Conditioning Guide: Ways to Tell You Have a Refrigerant Leak

Monday, June 4th, 2012

Your Miami air conditioner uses a chemical solution known as refrigerant to extract heat from indoor air and cool your house. This refrigerant is potentially harmful to the environment, however, so it is sealed up tightly inside your air conditioner. Under normal operation, your air conditioner should never need to be refilled with refrigerant as another device would be with fuel.

So, if your air conditioner is not cooling your home properly, one possible problem is a refrigerant leak, but how do you find such a leak and have it contained and repaired quickly and affordably?

Finding a Refrigerant Leak

Most refrigerant leaks are very small and therefore hard to detect. This is how they can go overlooked when your technician inspects the system during routine annual tune ups. However, if the leak is large enough to detect, it can be done with a leak detector.

For smaller leaks, pressure may need to be added to the system to force the leak a bit and find it. Then you must find a way to track the refrigerant back to the source of the leak in the coils and patch the job. For all these reasons, leak detection and repair should be handled by a Miami air conditioning professional. If you find an oily spot on your coils, this is a likely leak. You can also use a detergent soap to make these oily spots more apparent.

 Calling for Assistance

While finding a leak can be done a homeowner, the actual process of patching the leak is a professional job. Leaks can occur in a number of places in your air conditioner but most often, they need to be soldered or patched in some way and that requires professional equipment and a keen understanding of how your air conditioner works. If you think your air conditioner might have a refrigerant leak, give Air On Demand a call today!
