Understanding the Importance of Ductwork in Your Home

Monday, February 11th, 2013

Dcut Sealing | Miami | Air On Demand Most home owners hardly ever think about the ducts in their home unless there is an issue. However, leaky ducts themselves are a huge problem in many homes and many homeowners are not aware of the potential danger and financial loss caused by this. John Lippert, a specialist in energy efficiency and renewable energy, wrote this great article about the threat of leaky ducts for the U.S. Department of Energy website.

  • Leaky or damaged ductwork will leak conditioned air into the attic or crawlspace, costing you money and decreasing efficiency
  • Backdrafting can draw carbon monoxide down your chimney, which can be very dangerous to you and your family
  • Warm moist air can be pulled from outside due to leaky ducts, leading to mold and mildew in your home
  • Duct tape IS NOT the solution for leaky ducts, leave duct sealing to the professionals

Air On Demand offers ductwork installation, maintenance, repair and sealing services in the Miami area. Let us help diagnose your energy efficiency issues and make sure no hazardous backdrafts or mold growth is occurring in your home. Call Air On Demand today!

Benefits of a High Quality Air Filter in Cutler Bay

Monday, January 21st, 2013

You may not realize it, but on average most people spend the majority of their time indoors. That’s why indoor air quality in your home is so critical. The EPA estimates that poor indoor air quality is one of the top five leading threats to respiratory health in the United States. Having a good indoor air filtration system can have many positive benefits for your home. At Air On Demand, we provide complete indoor air quality services throughout the Cutler Bay area. We wanted to help out our customers in the area by putting together a quick list of some of the benefits to having a good indoor air filter for your Cutler Bay home.

Reduced Contaminants in Your Air

Obviously, the main reason for you to get a whole home air filtering system in Cutler Bay is to improve the quality of the air. Whole home air filtration systems use mechanical filters or electronic filters to remove pollutants like pet dander, dust, dust mite droppings, bacteria and mold spores from your air supply. This can potentially have a positive impact on the comfort of people in your home who may have allergies or asthma.

Reduced Dust Collection

With a whole home air filter, you’ll be able to remove much of the dust in your air before it has a chance to settle on your floors or furniture. Not only is this helpful for the quality of air in your home, it also may be able to help keep your home cleaner.

Particulate Destruction

There are also products available on the market that rather than removing particles from your air: they destroy them. Ultra-violet germicidal lights are designed to sit in your ducts and destroy organic contaminants like viruses, bacteria and mold spores. While ultra-violet light is only slightly damaging to humans, it is lethal to microorganisms. UV germicidal lights are great for homeowners in Cutler Bay that are interested in taking the next step in their home’s air filtration process.

If you’re interested in home air quality control in Cutler Bay, call Air On Demand. We have many years of experience offering complete home air filtration services throughout the Cutler Bay area.

Why Should I Care About My Home’s Ductwork? A Miami Heating and Air Conditioning Guide

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

Forced-air heating systems like furnaces or electric heat strips are extremely popular in Miami. They provide reliable and relatively cheap heating for your home. They also require little maintenance to keep them running well. However, there is one aspect of those systems that are rarely considered: the duct work. At Air On Demand, we do a lot of work on ducts in the Miami area. We thought it would be helpful if we put together some of the reasons why people should pay attention to their ducts.

Why Is Ductwork Important?

Well, the ducts are an essential part of your heating and air conditioning system. They deliver the heated and cooled air to each of your rooms. They have a critical job to do and without proper maintenance, your whole home can suffer.

Duct Leaks, Pinches and Cracks

Without proper maintenance and care, your ducts can start to cause a lot of problems for your home. Here just a few of them:

  • Wasted heat – You pay good money to heat the air in your home. In order to get from your furnace or AC system to your rooms, that air has to travel through your ducts. If your ducts have leaks or cracks in them, that heat could be escaping to the outside. This is obviously wasteful and undesirable.
  • Reduced efficiency – During a proper installation of ductwork, the heating contractor will try to make sure that the ducts take the shortest and straightest route from the air handler to each room. However, with a bad installation job, your ductwork might have unnecessary bends or even pinches in it. This makes it harder for the air handler to push the air and reduces efficiency.
  • Contaminants – While it is a good idea to let fresh air in from outside, you want to be able to control the quality of the air that comes in. If your ducts have cracks or are leaking, you might be letting in air that is filled with contaminants. This can lower the quality of your air and might increase the negative effects of allergens.

How Indoor Air Quality Effects Efficiency in Your Miami Home

Monday, November 5th, 2012

It may sound strange, but the quality of your indoor air can impact how efficiently your home in Miami runs. If you’ve never thought about the quality of your home’s air, it might be a good idea to start. The EPA says that indoor air quality is a leading threat to respiratory health in the United States. In this blog post we’re going to look at some steps to take that can improve indoor air quality and efficiency in your home.

Ventilation

Ventilation is a critical part of your home’s heating and air conditioning system. Not only does proper ventilation allow for increased efficiency, it allows new, fresh air into your home in a controlled way. You don’t want air coming into your home through leaks or cracks. You want to be sure that you are in control of where and how new air comes in. A good ventilation system will ensure proper pressure and air flow throughout your home as well.

Duct Sealing

The ducts in your Miami house are the arteries of your heating and air conditioning system. If you have cracks or leaks in them, you are allowing outside contaminants and mold to enter your air supply. Additionally, when your heated or cooled air travels through the ducts, a lot of it might be escaping through the holes. By having your ducts inspected and sealed you can not only increase the efficiency of your home but you can also increase the air quality in your home.

If you have any questions about the indoor air quality in your Miami home, contact Air On Demand. We would be more than happy to talk with you about some home efficiency and air quality solutions.

Importance of Good Ductwork in Your Miami Home

Monday, October 29th, 2012

If you have a forced air heating or air conditioning system in your Miami home, like a furnace or a central AC, then you have ducts. Your ductwork plays a crucial role in the comfort of your home. Ducts deliver the heated or cooled air to each room in your house. They are often neglected which can lead to increased costs, and other problems with your heating or air conditioning system. In this blog post, we’re going to talk about why good ductwork is so important to your house.

Greater Efficiency

Your ductwork contributes greatly to the overall efficiency of your heating and air conditioning system. Here are a few efficiency problems that we see in ductwork.

Ducts are too small or too big

One common issue that we see with duct work is that is either too small or too big. This can cause your heating and air conditioning system to have to work harder to heat or cool your home. If the ducts in your home are too small, then your system has to work harder to push the air through the tiny ducts. Similarly, if you duct work is too big then you’ll run into airflow problems. Your system will have to run longer to push enough air to your rooms.

Ducts have unnecessary bends or turns

If you have good ductwork, then it should take the shortest and most logical route from your air handler to the register. Unnecessary turn and bends can cause resistance as the air flows through the ducts. This can potentially decrease the efficiency of your system.

Increased Comfort

This can typically happen when the ducts in your home are too big. With oversized ducts the air will make it to certain parts of your house but not to others. This means that some rooms in your house will be the proper temperature while others won’t.

Utility Savings

One way that good duct work can save you money is that it is less prone to leaks and cracks. If you have poor ductwork that has holes in it, then you’re basically paying to heat or cool the outside air. Your heating and air conditioning system will have to work harder and longer to heat or cool your house when conditioned air is slipping out through holes in your ducts.

If you have any questions about your ductwork or if you’d like someone to inspect the ducts in your house in Miami, then call Air On Demand today!

Miami Air Quality Guide: What Air Filtration Options are Right for You?

Monday, September 24th, 2012

There are a number of air filtration options currently on the market in Miami that provide substantial protection against high levels of pollutants, allergens and contaminants in your home’s air supply. From dust and pet dander to mold spores and bacteria, a good air filtration system can remove almost anything. Here are some options and how to ensure you get the right one for your home.

  • Standard MERV Rated Filters – MERV ratings are used to measure the efficiency of a filter at removing smaller particles from the air. Your air handler came with a stock MERV rated filter that could remove between 40% and 60% of the particles in your air – enough for most homes without high pollutant levels or those who suffer from asthma or allergies. There are higher MERV rated filters that capture many more allergens, however.
  • HEPA Filtration – HEPA filtration is the equivalent of an MERV rating of up to 20, meaning it can remove 99.9% of all contaminants 0.3 microns or larger, a perfect fit for homes with pets and plants and those who suffer from allergies to both or asthma.
  • Electronic Air Cleaners – Electronic air cleaners remove smaller particles from smoke or exhaust fumes and are highly efficient at ionizing and separating air from other gasses.
  • Comprehensive Air Purifiers – Air purifiers combine both mechanical filtration and electronic air cleaning to remove smaller particles from your air. They are also very efficient in other ways, often managing humidity levels and sometimes containing UV germicidal lights.

Depending on the scope of the air quality problem in your Miami home, there are quite a few possible solutions you can turn to. The key is to ensure that the solution you choose will be sufficient for the health of your family members. Call Air on Demand today to learn more about improving the air quality in your Miami home!
